I grew up in North Tarrytown, NY, which has since been renamed to Sleepy Hollow. The author of the legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle was from that area.

Part of our literature requirements as kids naturally included Washington Irving (the said author). When I read the story of Rip Van Winkle I thought it was sad that he had missed 20 years of his life. The story as you may recall is of this Dutch man (Rip) who is constantly nagged by his wife for his laziness.

Their house is in disrepair and he does nothing to fix it leaving his wife to increasingly call on him to fix, which he doesn\'t do.

So one day to escape the nagging, he went up into the mountains. He sees a group of strange men who are playing games and drinking liquor. He is invited to join them, takes in some liquor and shortly thereafter decides to take a nap only to wake up 20 years later.

The story was set for before and after the Revolutionary War so Rip is unaware that a war was even fought. His wife has long since died and the town and its people were unrecognizable.

It wasn\'t until someone recognized him and he later hooked up with his now grown daughter that he had any reconnection with his past. She took him in and he mooched off of her.

As I said before, my reaction was that the story was sad because 20 years is a significant portion to lose out on to sleep.

I am not quite sure what reminded me of the story but as I recalled the details I thought that there may be more of a message for all of us.

Life is short and it can pass you by so make the most of it. pappy van winkle for sale I don\'t know if that is what Irving had in mind when he wrote the story but that is my new take on the story of Rip Van Winkle.

Why did I write about Rip Van Winkle? My wife and I have visited several hundred times, literally, a country inn in the Catskill Mountains called Belvedere Country Inn. It is a charming and quaint country inn and the proprietors will treat you like royalty.

Whenever I think of the Belvedere I think of the Rip Van Winkle story, which ironically Washington Irving had never visited the Catskills at the time of writing the story.
